Rules engine

A rules engine is software that keeps business or policy rules, such as rates, limits and required documents, outside the main program code, so administrators can change them without a software release. A versioned, date-effective rules engine also keeps past cases on the rules that applied at the time.

Versioning with start dates matters in government and finance work, where old cases must still be judged by the policy that applied when they happened.
